           Prairie crabapple

MALUS IOENSIS - PRAIRIE OR IOWA CRABAPPLE
- one of the few native U.S. crabapples, reaches 12 to 18 feet in height and forms thickets from root suckering. Flowers are light pink and fruit are hard, green, and astringent in taste. Very susceptible to leaf rust in humid areas but valuable as a native wildlife cover plant. Ranges throughout the mid-western states east of the plains.
