| FRAXINUS NIGRA - BLACK ASH - a tall, upright native tree reaching 50 to 60 feet in height on favorable sites with a crown spread of 25 to 40 feet. Black ash prefers a moist, well-drained soil but can tolerate wet soils making it a possible substitute for short-lived poplars or green ash on seasonally wet sites. Will tolerate soil pH levels of 5.0 to 7.5 but is intolerant of high salt levels. Native to the north central and northeast United States and southeast Canada. Best used in the eastern Dakotas, Minnesota, Iowa, and eastern Nebraska. |
