   Kentucky Coffeetree

Gymnocladus dioica – Kentucky Coffeetree (Climatic zone 4) – a medium to large tree of the legume family reaching 50 to 75 feet in height on favorable sites.  Grows naturally on moist, streamside soils but adapts well to varying soil types and conditions, moderately drought tolerant when established.  Open crowned with sparse branching.  Fruit is a large brown pod.  Important to use seedlings grown from seed with known hardiness.  Native to the central and northern Midwest to the northeast U.S.
