Crataegus crus-galli – Cockspur hawthorn - (climatic zone 4) – An attractive, small, native hawthorn reaching 15 to 25 feet in height and spread, widely spreading with low branches. Foliage is glossy, leathery, and dark green. White flowers in May followed by persistent red fruit clusters in September. Thorns are numerous. Native from the eastern U.S. through the Midwest and South. Good, adaptable wildlife and screening plant. |
