Amelanchier laevis – Alleghany serviceberry - (climatic zone 3) – An upright growing, small tree or tall shrub reaching 18 to 25 feet or more in height.  Native from the northeast U.S. through the lake states and south through the Midwest.  Generally non-suckering, white flowers in spring followed by edible, sweet dark purple fruits in late June to early July. Excellent wildlife plant and attractive, small tree in naturalistic landscape plantings.
