| Amelanchier canadensis – Shadblow serviceberry – (climatic zone 3) – An upright growing, small tree or tall shrub, multi-stemmed in habit reaching 15 to 20 feet in height. Does sucker lightly from the roots, white flowers in spring followed by small edible, sweet, dark purple fruit in early July. Native from the northeast U.S. through the lake states and south through the Midwest. This and other serviceberry species are not as tolerant of high soil pH or droughty soils as Juneberry (A. alnifolia). Excellent wildlife plant and attractive tall shrub in naturalistic landscape plantings. This specie is considered by some authors as a variant of Amelanchier laevis. |
